If you just twisted them around each other, they would fall apart.
first of all, it makes a sort of arrow patteren instead of a braid pattern and you use a different technique

what the fuck is move it up
When she says “move it up” she means that after the string crosses from one hand to the other, there is now only two strings on one hand, i.e. a string around the ring finger and around the middle finger. The string around the middle finger needs to be transferred to the index finger, and the string around the ring finger to the middle finger. Example at 1.14
