Kids Birthday Parties – Have They Gone Over the Top?

December 31, 2009

Whatever happened to good old fashioned birthday parties with cake and back-yard games? My nine year daughter recently attended a birthday party which included a limousine ride to The Ritz hotel for tea, followed by manicures and pedicures at a posh shop. I think most of us were first picked up in limos for our wedding – not a child’s birthday party. Since when did birthday parties become such extravagant affairs?

CNN.com reported on a full service children’s birthday party planning company in California that is run by a team trained in child development. They take six weeks to plan and it costs as much as $10,000. Now that’s a party.

In our now “more is better” culture, parents and kids are having higher and higher expectations of birthday parties. As a result, parents are feeling the financial strain and stress and kids are overloaded and over-indulged.

So how do you create an inexpensive, yet memorable birthday party? Keep it simple. Have the party at home and invite eight friends – not 20. Plan a fun craft that can be used as the take home party favor – eliminating the over-stuffed throw-away goody bag. Play good old fashioned games that kids will love. An obstacle course or sack race is great for both boys and girls of all ages. For younger kids, you can’t go wrong with ‘Duck Duck Goose’ (or Princess, Princess, Frog). For older kids, a dress-up relay race is always fun. Just use a bunch of clothes from the closet such as ties, dress up shoes, party dresses, hats.

There are lots of great birthday party ideas sites online to find fun birthday party themes and party games ideas. One site to try is Amazing Moms. Readers from all over the country submit birthday party ideas. You can also check out your local crafts store such as Michaels or Ben Franklin crafts for your activity materials or if you’re short on time, go online and find craft packages available to you.

Remember that the birthday party is for your children. Pick something that every child can participate in and keep it simple. This will allow you too as their parents to enjoy the festivities, hold the video camera and simply share in the excitement of your child’s celebration! They will grow up too fast so relish in these exciting and developing years!

Turn your kids’ birthday parties into their sweetest memories

10 ideas for organizing your kids parties:

  1. Choose a theme for your kid’s birthday party. He or she might have a favorite tale, cartoon movie or love to play a particular sport. Involve your kid in the decision making process regarding the party’s theme. When choosing the theme, take into account your kid and his friends’ ages and think about who will prevail at your kid’s party: the girls or the boys. A pirate party will make both girls and boys of all ages happy. Still, teenagers may enjoy more parties that involve more music and dancing than playing. A rock’n’roll party might be perfect for them.
  2. Make sure all your kid’s favorite characters are there: on the plates, on the cups and glasses, on the tablecover, even on the balloons.
  3. Have lots of colorful decorations, a lot more than in any other party: happy birthday banners and cascades, room rolls, inflatable cakes and many, many colorful balloons.
  4. Make your kid feel like the king or the queen of the ball, being dressed like his favorite character. Depending on his preferences, it could be a Superman, Spiderman or Batman costume for boys and for girls tinker bell dress and wings, a princess Fiona or a Mini Mouse costume. If the party is for your teenage daughter, you can make her feel like Miss Universe by making her wear a “Birthday girl” flashing sash.
  5. The cutting cake moment should be the main attraction of the party. You can use a musical knife to cut the cake, musical candles or a Birthday party canopy to put the spotlight on the cake.
  6. Prevent kids, especially those of small ages, to get bored. Involve them in interesting activities and games like a treasure hunt, for example.
  7. Have party items customized with your kid’s face. You can get a banner customized with your kid’s photo, where the guests can write “Happy birthday” messages or have chocolate bars in customized wrappers.
  8. Sweets make kids happy. Have lollipops, chocolate bars, candy necklaces, marshmallow cones and gummy candy pizzas.
  9. Have the kids wear party items like happy birthday glasses and even let them take them home, to recall them of how much fun they had.
  10. Be cost-effective. You can buy various party kits including the main items you need for a wonderful kids birthday party.

Organizing a kids birthday party may be even more challenging than organizing a party for adults because it requires more creativeness. But every effort is worth because you will have a lot of fun on the way and the opportunity to feel like a kid again, even if only for a few hours.

Putting on a Great Party for You and Your Children

July 20, 2009

Childrens parties and party supplies are married together synonymously.

Hosting a childrens party can be an exciting time for both you as a parent/guardian, or for a child who is the centre of attention on that special day. We all want whats best, but how do we make the best of the occasion.

1. decide where the party is to be held.

Indoor parties.

Party Themes are a great way to enjoy a childs party. What is the child into? spiderman, Barbie, Pirates, Scooby Doo? Most party shops will cater for many different themes. A whole range can be purchased online in many themes. Banners, Plates, cups, napkins, tablecover’s are just a few ideas each theme range can have. Costumes and Themed balloons are an idea to set a great party to remember

Depending on the childs age, a pinata party is generally a great party activity which all children can be involved with. Pinata’s are made in many designs, so finding one to suit should be fairly easy. Checkout online party supplies stores for different designs. Fill the pinata with lots of toys and sweets and hang it up with plenty of room to spare. The aim of the game is to hit the pinata with a plastic pinata stick as hard as the child can. If the pinata doesnt break, the child joins the back of the que for their next turn. If the pinata breaks, the sweets and party toys will fall out onto the ground. At this point, all the children scramble to collect as many items as possible. This marks the end of the game. Great fun for all

Outdoor Parties

Party themes may not be as effective for outdoor activities. Sure, the themed partyware can be set indoors and other attractions can be available outdoors. Bouncy castles are a great way to keep the children occupied, as long as they are supervised by a responsible adult.Bouncy castles accomodate various themes for all ages, and really tire the kids out. With reasonable prices, hiring a bouncy castle is a great way to enjoy a mess less kids party.

2. How many guests

Make sure the guests are invited formally with a party invitation. This gives the guest the all important facts about the occasion. Only when you get a reply can you count the exact numbers if guests on the list. Purchase only the right amount of partyware for the occasion. Over allocating can be a costly affair. Each child usually has one party plate, cup, hat, blowout, party bag and piece of cake. These are the essentials to purchase as a minimum for each child. Balloons, party bag fillers can be bought form many superstores and party stores.

Take a look online for further party ideas and I hope your party occasion is a great success
